Turn on your alarm system!

Have a neighbor protect your mail for you

Don't advertise you are away from home

Set your lights on timers, in various rooms so burglars cannot pick up a pattern

Install motion sensor lights in front and in back of your home

Ensure all of your doors and windows are locked

Inform a neighbor when you are leaving and ask them to watch for anything suspicious

Leave a phone number with a neighbor where you can be reached, and leave a spare set of keys

Do not leave valuables in plain sight through the windows

Inform a police department when you are away from home, many are happy to patrol the area

Make sure your house looks lived in. Arrange for your garbage to be put out and snow removal while you are away
